Background and

Intro: Pick-Up Lines:

So last night I was reading in the book of Numbers, and I realized… I don’t have yours!
You really are a fisher of men, cause baby you just reeled me in.
Unfortunately I cant perform miracles and I’ve only got enough bread and fish for 2 people.
I put the “stud” in bible study.
Is it a sin that you stole my heart?
We were called by the Jesus message,…all our focus should be on Him. Not by smooth talking, not by an attractive smile or crafty marketing. It wasn’t the preacher, the fog or the lights. It was the gospel of Jesus Christ. The message that saves.

Notice the Controversy of the Cross. v. 18

foolishness- many look at the message of a Jewish rabbi, beaten, hung on a cross as a criminal until he breathed his last as foolish.

Jesus is said to have said on the cross, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” Because Jesus was insane and the God he thought would rescue him did not exist. And he died on that cross like a fool. He fancied himself the son of God and he could barely convince twelve men to follow him at a time when the world was full of superstition.
It is a display of weakness. a Messiah who was beaten and killed.
To the greek mind, it seemed foolish to believe that God could take on human flesh.
But at the same time, there are those who hear the words and say, these are the words of Life.
This is why people are tempted to make it more attractive. Its why we are tempted to credit people or methods with salvation instead of recognizing that God does it. When we do that, we are falling back into a worldly wisdom.

Recognize the Design of the Cross

It is controversial by design… for the weak.
Many people reject it. If we want it to spread shouldn’t we dress it up as much as we can. sugar coat it. make it more attractive.
The wisdom of this world puffs up people in pride.
This elevation of human wisdom and knowledge would grow over the next century into a full blown gnosticism, teaching that you are saved through a knowledge.
It is for the down and out. The gospel causes you to look at yourself and see your sin, and then to outside yourself and see salvation in Jesus Christ. To ask for help.
Story of Homeless man: Its hard to ask for help.

Trust in the Sufficiency of the Cross

The Wenger Giant is the world’s largest Swiss Army knife, packing 141 functions into 87 implements. At 9” wide and 32 ounces, this dang thing is so big that you could use it as a pretty nice anchor for your boat, if it didn’t list at $2100 (street price $1300).
laser pointer, fish scaler, magnifying glass, pliers, saws, blades, tire guage, flash light. etc.
v. 18. v. 24 It is God’s power, to us who are being saved.
last verse:
Give God the glory for your salvation: not a person, program, or a preference. not a song, not yourself.
Share the gospel with confidence: your job is to announce the gospel not advertise it. Don’t worry, go to someone in love and simply talk to them about the words of Life. Tell them what Christ has done in you.
Pay attention to the packaging: a baby vs an adult.
Romans 3:23–24 HCSB
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. They are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 HCSB
For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
Ephesians 2:4–5 HCSB
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us, made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!
Romans 10:9–10 HCSB
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.
